Currently Joystream has a limited number of videos and has seen slow expansion, it would appear that many more videos are now being posted and with the consideration to actively market Joystream through Online Blogs we can expect that many more users will soon join.

At present the curation of videos is managed through Google Sheets, whilst this solution is and will work with limited numbers of videos as Joystream expands this will become unsustainable and cumbersome to manage.

My proposal (I can not implement this, but can present the strategy) is additional functions to the Web front end of Joystream for users and channel owners, whereby channel owners can be warned/blocked/have videos deleted and be notified of such.

A simpler solution to managing the video content at Joystream might be something like the following.

Curators have an Admin page/login to play.joystream.org whereby when viewing videos they would have UI buttons to Warn (with ability to describe reasons why), Delete and Block Video content. It would also be quicker for Curators (and provide better function for the Video Channel owner/content creator) if the action of Warn, Block, Delete sent a notification to them perhaps as a message to them within the forum and to their registered email account.

As Joystream grows this management system would allow for content curators to manage the viewing/checking of video content far quicker and (ideally) the actions necessary after a user is warned for a video, could be automated. For example, users is warned about video and given 3 days to make changes, content curator receives notification to check video at end of 3 days and if no satisfactory change is made curator can take relevant action to delete video.

This Web UI change would have functions than integrate into the back end database, creating a centralised management of play.joystream.org that is sustainable as the service grows.

I hope other members see the benefit to Joystream to implement these changes, for the efficient and effective management of the service.

hi, overall, I think this is a very insightful observation, and your proposed solution actually sounds like it would be excellent. I think we have not thought very carefully about how curators should coordinate and do their job, we have just given them the command line tool and expected them to solve it some how. I think we should wait to see how curation gets on when Sumergoes live (very very soon), as this will likely bring more content online, and the need for curation will increase. Then we can evaluate different options based on that experience and how long they would take to implement.

Please add any other ideas you have on the subject to this issue, and I will keep track of it as we start tackling this question.

At present the curation of videos is managed through Google Sheets

Can you actually share information about what policy this is? I certainly was not aware of this.

Meskalin-Joystream commented 3 years ago

Unsure of the current policy for Video Curation, our Lead Curator has kindly implemented the current Google Sheets system for initially managing Video/Channel Curation. Google sheet works well for now, but eventually it will be unsustainable when the site has exponentially grown.

As Sumer is released and more content is added, I'm sure as part of the Curation team we'll see the issues we face and build an idea of what the Curator Admin UI will need to be.

I very much agree.

As we move forward with Sumer the look and feel of Joystream is getting very professional, I highlighted a clear issue of the difficulties in content management which was made obvious with a video I posted (it never got Curated). Although I could have verified my own video, I left it when posted as I felt Curators should not curate their own videos and due to this it was never reviewed (I later curated it when discussed with Igrex).

An idea to better manage Content would be a new Joystream Management Studio, whilst being an easy to use front end like Joystrem Studio it would have all Curator Admin functions to Delete, Accept, Warn, Ban and request changes to Videos.

The web GUI should be required to provide these functions having an 'un-curated' video queue section to he page, where any new videos posted will be displayed (thumbnail and description, as per the main page). This way, it will not be possible for videos to be left without curation and the list of videos requiring curation will be obvious for curators (As videos receive Curation not requiring further action, they would auto remove from the queue).

Removing the need to post a warning or deletion notice in the forum is essential, as we see an influx of new users we cannot hope everyone will review the forum (neither should they be expected to on a full release of the video platform) as this detracts from the polish of the 'finished' JoyStream platform.

As specified before, Users need to have a notice feature in the JoyStream studio where they can see warning/deletions/change requests against their accounts. Also the automatic function of the user receiving an email from 'JoyStream Curation' to notify them of a requested change/deletion/warning, specifying the time the have to respond etc is required to (hopefully) get people to make changes as requested even if they've not logged into JoyStream recently.

I hope the benefit of these changes can be seen by everyone and once implemented into Joystream, that the Joystream Curation Studio (or similar page/frontend) would be an effective management tool for the platform as we move forward.

Although the Curation team is currently managing the workload, as we see more videos posted it will get harder to keep up with the workload especially with the cumbersome method used now with the online 'content management Sheet'. The proposed Content Management Studio Web GUI would allow the Curation team to more quickly and effectively manage the videos being posted, ensure nothing is missed and would largely increase the speed of curation. This in turn will enable the current team of dedicated curators to manage even more videos as the platform grows, without the need to take on other Curators too quickly which ensures the team are dedicated and professional.

Again, thank you for highlighting this point, and you are obviously correct.

Why don't we start here, can the current curation lead (not sure if that is actually you), write down a definitive list of concrete problems they need to solve in order to do a good job with continued growth. I stress, only problems, let us think about possible solutions. Make them as concrete and concise as possible.

Igrex is lead Curator, I'll raise this with him now and we will get this posted here. Making these changes will help for JoyStream's solid foundations 👍

Saw your discussion for a long time. I did not write, because there is no clear understanding of the general system. Since the participants are building the system, I will note as a participant:

  1. The human factor plays a very important role. In the absence of coordination on the part of the manager, there are no automatic or manual schemes for instant decision making.
  2. The platform is not fully decentralized and also poorly scalable.
  3. The platform seems to lack new channel creators, preferably in the same style. As a leader of curators, I would like to point out:
  4. As already mentioned, the video platform rating system does not imply fixing the channel or video behind the curator, and neither the blockchain nor the platform has a clue - a verified video. It is necessary to create a web tool in which videos were assigned to the current curators, statistics were kept, or it was possible to upload information about views. My Excel table is still working and highlights collisions, has records of warnings about violations or duplicates. I know that the system for curators is being developed by l1dev, on the old network I have already tried its earlier version.
  5. Enthusiastic curators are not always active. It depends on many factors. This week I want to try the additional reward system through requests for funds and layoffs. I suggest that in addition to 1 curators, the leader can request additional rewards.
  6. A proposal for leadership turnover was recently approved. I am studying who could replace me and there are already motivated candidates - two girls lyazufey1812 and kiraa.

True, it sounded like I didn't like JoyStream. No, I like it =)
