It seems that there is periodic, unpredictable downtime of our primary query node and the usage of Pioneer is enough that this is now becoming a bit of an issue. Although we do not have any form of "official" backup QN, it seems like the Apps WG will probably be getting one soon (or perhaps even switching Pioneer itself to its own specific QN)
Solution
In the event of primary QN downtime/unavailability, automatically connect to a backup QN.
