Add interactive usage example in a jupyter notebook.
(Whether we actually want to do this I don't know, but wanted to do this for my own benefit so thought I'd open up as a PR.)
The PR also involves some refactoring / cleaning up of obsolete code. If we don't want the notebook I can open a separate PR containing only the cleanup.
