Custom connection doesn't connect to anything, always get a "connection error"

Trying to make the custom connection work, but nothing works. I set a local dummy listener on localhost (netcat: nc -vv -l -p 8888) to see what gets on the port, but there is not even a connection to it! The documentation doesn't give any information about what is supposed to be put in the "custom link"...
