Resolve deprecation for v1.0.1 #102

I gave this a try - and reading MAT files now works nicely in 1.0.1. However,

 fh = matopen("Ziggy.mat","w")

gives an error message which starts with 

ERROR: objects of type typeof(close) cannot be finalized
