Journo Salary Sharer

Goal

A place for journalists to share their salary with me (for research) and with each other to start a conversation. By having a sense of how much others in your position or newsroom are paid, you can better negotiate for a raise or when seeking a new job. This tool will provide the impetus and means to share your salary with your coworkers.

Key Users

Early and mid-career journalists, particularly those in newer jobs that have less established salary expectations (development, social media, digital video, etc.)

Features

• Survey form with three types of fields

  • Dropdown (for "field" question)
  • Multiple choice
• Zip code lookup for cost of living question
• A slider that changes what text is displayed in two fields as it's dragged
• Sharing option to Twitter that pulls from a pre-filled field
• Sharing option to copy text to clipboard that pulls from a pre-filled field

Data-related work

• Once people enter their information, there will need to be a way to populate that into the suggested share text.
• Once enough people have used the tool, I would like to be able to email people that we have enough data to give them some context about how much they make compared with others with their job title/years experience. This may end up dropping down to "tabled ideas" section.

  Tabled ideas

• Some kind of graphic to "gamify" the experience of filling it out. Maybe a person cartoon that fills up with cash as you fill it out. Or a person icon that adds to a stack to show what number person you are to fill out the survey or share your salary on social media.
