Just to clarify: This happens when you type the keyboard shortcut to close the command window?

It seems like you have compiled Julia with some uncommitted changes. It would be great if you could try to compile without them (git reset --hard), or tell us what they are (git diff). Updating to the latest version would also be nice before submitting a report, but I do not remember seeing anything that would fix this in the last 4 days.

Yes (computer freezes and the screen indicate to restart the computer by pressing the power button of my MacBook Pro).

git diff returns nothing because prior to submitting the issue I updated to the latest version (with git pull).

Strange, your version information points at Commit 624e521* (2014-01-04 08:26 UTC) which is 4 days old. Did you remember to type make after git pull?

The backtrace information you post contains memory addresses, instead of function names. Would you be able to run make clean && make debug && ./usr/bin/julia-debug-readline and then close the window with cmd-w to see if you get a better backtrace?

PS. If you put long dumps of text (eg. the crash report) in a gist the issue will be shorter and your comments will not drown.

pagnani commented 10 years ago

Ok I did as you indicated ( make clean && make debug && ./usr/bin/julia-debug-readline)

julia> versioninfo()
Julia Version 0.3.0-prerelease+867
Commit bec200e* (2014-01-08 05:23 UTC)
DEBUG build
Platform Info:
  System: Darwin (x86_64-apple-darwin10)
  CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU M 620 @ 2.67GHz
  WORD_SIZE: 64
  BLAS: libopenblas (USE64BITINT NO_AFFINITY)
  LAPACK: libopenblas
  LIBM: libopenlibm

Then cmd-w (to close window) and, again, computer freezes

When I restart the computer the there appear the OS X crash report appended (similar to the one I already sent you)

There is no julia dump file in the directory where I runned julia (where could it be?)

Thanks, Unfortunately it does not seem like that relieved more useful information. I hope I at least clarified the issue somewhat for someone to try to fix this.

ViralBShah commented 10 years ago

Unrelated, but I think we should officially drop 10.6 support. It is crazy to try and support 4 releases of an OS!

pagnani commented 10 years ago

I agree with Viral,

I should have upgraded to Mavericks (it's free).

The main reason that 10.6 has stuck around so long is that people on PPC Macs can't upgrade past 10.6.

simonster commented 10 years ago

People on PPC Macs can't upgrade past 10.5. People on 32-bit Intel Macs (the first gen Intel MBP, Mac Mini, and iMac) can't upgrade past 10.6.

StefanKarpinski commented 10 years ago

Oh, right. I knew there was some hardware constraint.

jiahao commented 10 years ago

Apple has no official end-of-life policy; however, the general sentiment appears to be that people regard 10.6 as dead, e.g. here.

This would be nice, but I think we should get some kind of solution for #4609 in place so we can actually perform an install base survey first. I don't doubt that 10.6 will be a small portion of users, but I am curious as to how small it actually is.

ivarne commented 10 years ago

Would not just putting making a survey on google docs and publishing it on the mailing lists be enough to get some sense of the size of the platforms. It will only reach out to those who follow the lists, but we can ask what their friends (that they do not believe will answer the survey) use.

JeffBezanson commented 10 years ago

Is there any path forward here, or is this wontfix?

Keno commented 10 years ago

I'm not sure we can really remote debug a mac kernel panic.

ivarne commented 10 years ago

The number of replies to https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/julia-users/rBpf7nF2eLo suggests wontfix, if we are reasonably sure that it is limited to OS X 10.6.*. The workaround is simple but very annoying for those who type keyboard combinations without thinking. Do not use Cmd-w to close the terminal window while Julia is running.

mbauman commented 10 years ago

Given how rare kernel panics have become, and given that they're almost always a hardware or driver problem, it'd be invaluable to get either:

pagnani commented 10 years ago

The kernel panics was caused by:

  1. run julia on xterm (through X11) and not from (Terminal.app or iTerm.app)
  2. at the julia prompt cmd-w (shortcut from closing windows in mac) coused the kernel panic

I can no longer reproduce the issue since, meanwhile (and partially due to this annoying fact), I decided to upgrade my macbook to 10.9 where cmd-w is just closing the window as it should.

  • This user to try running Julia within Terminal.app or iTerm.app
  • Another 10.6 user to confirm
  • This user to run a RAM hardware test (e.g., Apple Hardware Testhttp://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509 )
