Update JuliaQuantum website. #9

Closed i2000s closed 9 years ago

i2000s commented 9 years ago

As we are finishing up the initiative phase of the organization, we are ready to switch our gear to employ our website to power the development of our real projects. All the links connected to long discussions of organizational issues will gradually fade out from our website, instead, we will have more vivid content to attract people in/outside of Julia community to use and develop our libraries and forge a healthy eco-system for our organization. I will work on a dev branch of the website during the winter break. Fancy style of webpages or beautifying works are open to everyone. The dev branch will be merged to the master branch when the QuBase.jl repo is filled with enough functions.

A brief summary of content to be updated (in progress):

Suggestions, artworks (like a new logo) and related ideas can be posted here. Supporting institutes and individuals will be acknowledged on the website as well. Correct me if any information present online is not precise.

On commit 1f05d72251f37861d6afbf15146cc6d9c8b39dd0, I have uploaded a set of new logo images for JuliaQuantum org, all with .svg source codes. One is the pure image version, the other one is the texted version. Affected are:

Everyone like the new logo? That would be a trademark or something to our organization and projects.

BTW, to create the new pure image logo, I have used the .svg Logo for JuliaLang created by @StefanKarpinski and maybe others. I assume the Julia logo and trademark are free and open-source. A few other Julia umbrella organizations have made their logos based on the original one. So, I used CC-BY-SA license for our new logos. Let me know if there is any law issue... Don't want to be thrown into prison :(

Looks pretty cool! Just a few minor ideas: Could you match the blue color of Quantum to the blue dot on j? Maybe the ket logo (awesome idea!) could reflect the combination Julia-Quantum by having the dots as a bra and "Qu" (or Psi or such) as a ket? Should we write "Julia libraries for Quantum computing/calculations"? I think there was a thread on the logo license in the mailing list some time ago, but I don't rembember the outcome. Might be good to ask Stefan again.

That logo is awesome! I like @acroy's ideas as well.

Jutho commented 9 years ago

Thanks for doing this. The logo looks cool.

Looks pretty cool! Just a few minor ideas: Could you match the blue color of Quantum to the blue dot on j?

I would also be in favor of that. Also, I think the serif font of quantum doesn’t combine well with the sans serif font of Julia.

Maybe the ket logo (awesome idea!) could reflect the combination Julia-Quantum by having the dots as a bra and "Qu" (or Psi or such) as a ket?

That would also be a great idea.

Thanks for everyone's response! I just got the permission from Stephan Karpinski for using the Julia logo, but not clear about the licensing yet. They may want to reserve the copyright to avoid bad things happening on trademarks and such.

I also borrowed a Mac computer to find the best matching font for our logo today. So, my favorite text-version for the website title is

1.1. juliaquantum_black

Then there are

1.2. juliaquantum_blackbrackets

1.3. juliaquantum_blackblank

1.4. juliaquantum_blue3

1.5. Matching the blue color inside of the first dot (looks too heavy on the left-side part): juliaquantum_blue1

1.6. Matching the blue on the edge of the first dot: juliaquantum_blue2

The text-version is suposed to be explicit and can be used as titles and inline graphic scripts. The other version of the logo as shown below is better to be framed in a square shape for a good visible effect and abstract meaning as icons. My favorite one is

2.1. juliaquantum_logo_250x142

2.2. juliaquantum_logo_slim3_250x142

2.3. juliaquantum_logo_slim2_250x142

The bra-ket version as suggested by acroy seems too long for this purpose: 2.4. c users qxd desktop qailogo1 juliaquantum_logo_sandwich_250x142

Which two do you guys prefer now?

jrevels commented 9 years ago

I think 1.1, 1.2, and 1.6 all look great for a text title, and 2.2/2.3 (can barely tell the difference) for the icon. I do like the idea of 2.4, but I think you're right about the advantages of keeping the icon in square boundaries.

jrevels commented 9 years ago

On this note, can we change "Julia For Quantum" on the site/on the GitHub organization page to say "Quantum Mechanics in Julia"? I think the latter is slightly clearer and reads better.

i2000s commented 9 years ago

@jrevels I just updated 2.2 which is highlighting the flavor of light-weightiness, speed and dynamics, with a smaller angle of the bracket (notice the bracket's upper bar is almost parallel to the edge of the two circles on the left). Modified from 2.2, icon 2.1 has the same speedy feeling yet with more power and weight, and balances the blank between the circles and the bracket. 2.3 is relatively light-weight and static. 2.2 and 2.3 have more blank space in the image, and look like a little weak and loose in my perspective. That's why I had the modification to 2.1. "Powerful, fast, balanced and broad-range (heavy)" were what I want to emphasize in designing the image regarding our packages and the Julia language itself. I was also thinking of using the three balls to draw the orbits of three particles with fading tails to express the same idea except for the weightiness. But it is just too involving to draw at this moment.

Regarding the description of JuliaQuantum org, I was thinking of Julia for Quantum Science and Technology, since we will eventually branch out to a wide spectrum. I am fine with the Quantum Mechanics in Julia, just a minor negative impression that this last combination changes the order from JuliaQuantum. The Julia libraries for Quantum Computing/Calculations nomination seems too narrow and ruling out the possibility of using Julia to do real-time quantum control and many others which some of my colleagues are looking forward to. Yet, that possibility may be too slim for Julia.

How about now?

acroy commented 9 years ago

Did you update your comment above? I am in favor of 1.6 and 2.3 (although I am actually fine with all of 2.1-2.3). I still like the idea of 2.4 as a "shorthand" for JuliaQuantum, but I also see your point about the non-squareness.

Travis-S commented 9 years ago

What about taking 1.2 and removing the bra? It would seem to suggest Julia "acts" on quantum which would be pretty cute.

i2000s commented 9 years ago

@Travis-S +1 juliaquantum_blackket

The initialization of the Jekyll version of our website has been staged just now. If you have time, please take a look at the dev-jekyll branch of this repo. You may need to install Jekyll to preview the website. Another set of our logos can be found there--we need to decide which to use eventually. News, projects and community pages are created following the framework of the JuliaLang.github.com pages. I have filed a request for permission both to @StefanKarpinski earlier and the julia-dev group today. Hopefully there is no problem to reuse their work for JuliaQuantum. In the mean time, feel free to edit and put more interesting contents over that branch.

There are more work can be done for the website, like adding social-share buttons for posts, RSS feeds and so on. I need to work on the coming SQuINT workshop for now. Once our website and coordinating works got widely approved, I will organize and announce meetups among Julia community and academic institutes nearby Berkeley area. If you will, I appreciate any comments on the topics that can be highlighted during the meetups.

Cheers, Qi

Love the logo!

i2000s commented 9 years ago

As you have noticed, our website has been remodeled in Jekyll and styled kin to JuliaLang.org for a while! The major influence for us is that you can much easily push Github Flavored Markdown posts to appear on our website for updating project progresses. Let me know if there is anything I can make a quick improvement.

One thing left for us to decide is the logo of JuliaQuantum. I have temparily used the logos I think most people would like following the comments above. There is only one small change on the text logo: the color of the ket sign has been changed to be brighter. Commit below if you prefer other alternatives. After this decision, I will upload the source files (a.k.a. the svg file) to the repo under MIT license as the Julia logo does to let everyone reuse them to make up project logos if you like. For example, the following one :-)

qubase_logo_slim3_785x142
