If you open local politics or look at statistics and all other interfaces, pressing ESC should take you back to the normal view as if you pressed the exit button on that screen.
(It's just a shortcut to press X on the UI.)
(Headsup that it should not work at any other times, such in events, picking cards, students and what not)
