if owner views itself as focal point of the local fan-zine enthusists, then it is more a club, where particular interests (graphic novel fans) gather to share and enjoy (or critique) the material. In which case it has a future if reinvent itself
This is a great way to frame it
reinvent itself to be closer to library/archive with a subscription base which goes to purchasing electronic rights for its members.
Not sure about this as I don't know enough about the actual community/market to know if this is something that would appeal to comic shop patrons/community-members. @thekerp what do you think?
This question is pertinent as we've all seen what Amazon has done to the book publishing industry and encroachment on megamalls ... so if the comic store is merely the end-recipient (convenient pickup logistics hub) of dead-tree material, its days are numbered.
However, if owner views itself as focal point of the local fan-zine enthusists, then it is more a club, where particular interests (graphic novel fans) gather to share and enjoy (or critique) the material. In which case it has a future if reinvent itself to be closer to library/archive with a subscription base which goes to purchasing electronic rights for its members.
The business concept might be ... "buy one comic, borrow up to 2 others" and have a rule that you can "borrow" each comic for only 8 hours max. This is legally permissible (even enforcecable via DRM) as it comes under time-space shifting. So long as one (cyberphysical) copy means only one member can read it at once, then 1book @ 24 hours == 3books @ 8 hrs each
So can the DRM be allowed to scan in pages and enforce the lending criteria?
