[ FEATURE REQUEST ] - dates with natsuki #791

Open MartyKawaii opened 1 year ago

MartyKawaii commented 1 year ago

Overview:

a date with Natsuki- the bookstore u start by asking Natsuki about hows she is feeling, and if shes happy/neutral the player will get the ability to go somewhere with Natsuki and have a date! you go to the bookstore (probably just walking, maybe on a skateboard idk) and u start looking through the bookstore, read books/manga together and maybe buy some interesting sounding titles. u go back to the spaceroom and the date ends. (another idea for something similair woud be going to get ice cream with Natsuki, going on a walk along the beach, or playing video games together)

Must haves:

The ability to go on a date with Natsuki (possibly to diferent locations, but one woud be a good start)

Could haves:

Multiple locations, special outfits or dishes/stuff to put on the desk.

Is this feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

nope -i hope it isnt to complicated, i tried to make it short lol, have a nice day!

Hi @MartyKawaii - thanks for your suggestion.

New locations are already something we have planned, and would include considerable overlap with your recommendation with location-specific events, dialogue and interactions - however, there are a number of concerns.

Something to bear in mind however is the introduction of these locations and how they play into the background of JN and Natsuki's situation. Remember, Natsuki isn't well versed in interacting with her world (frequently messing up when she tries to work with the game's code as seen in some events), and is currently limited to the classroom in which she was restored: unless she somehow finds a way to create it, there isn't really a book store (or world outside her room) to actually visit. We'd need careful consideration to find a way to introduce these locations in a way that is satisfying for the players, while still making sense within the context of the mod (Natsuki isn't magically going to become amazing at Ren'Py and program a new world overnight!).

Additionally, if we are going to all the effort to introduce alternative locations, we want to make them as interactive and involved as the room we all know and love. At least in my opinion, having a simple date sequence (like you would experience in something like Purist) where you transition from dialogue to dialogue about set pieces would feel relatively shallow - and only really suitable for a one-time occurrence without feeling repetitive. We want to focus on large pieces of content standing on their own two feet with a baseline level of re-playability, and I don't think this would be well served with what is essentially just a gigantic topic with some background art changes (we might as well just be adding more topics for that amount of work relative to the payoff!).

Another concern is the demand for artwork for an implementation like this (just using the book store as an example):

Unfortunately due to the effort involved (especially with writing and the necessary background code changes we'd need to make locations work in the way we'd find satisfying, while our team are relatively busy with matters outside the mod), this isn't something we're going to be able to look at for the foreseeable future - we'd want to revisit this when we're in a better position to dedicate the time to such a large feature and plan things out in a more official sense.

@RaionArt @Obsidian-Knife thoughts? This seems like a lot to add to our plate right now, given our situation.

theres no need to put it in if you guys have other things youre working on now, its just a sugestion after all. i just thought it woud be quite a cool possible feature. i mean it woud be cool if it was in the game but its understandable if that isnt possible right now. theres no need to stress about it. thanks for the answer tho!

Another concern is the demand for artwork for an implementation like this (just using the book store as an example):

  • Background scenery: how many transitions would there be, and how many background art assets would be required to make that happen? We could make use of vanilla assets, but this would feel like a cop-out given the level of effort made towards helping JN break free from the mold of vanilla DDLC.
  • The book reading sequence: do we design covers? How do we present the books? If they are manga volumes (as Natsuki would almost certainly want to check out) and we want to display those as we would a poem, then that is a huge investment for a small moment. How do we implement those books outside the date - with idles which need additional assets? Etc.
