[ FEATURE REQUEST ] - minor thing/discussion, the requirements for music unlocking #840

Overview:

this one might get shot down right away, but i dont mind; i feel like the way newer players unlock the music topic could be improved so that fresh players have some [but not necessarily all] control over whats playing

Must haves:

i had 2 ideas that do the same thing of giving the player some [not all] agency over the music: either having the music event be moved to normal tier but be locked under a smaller time sink, or have a small pool of default music the player could use while custom music is saved for a later date when natsuki is happy [maybe natsuki finds a disc of music to use in the musicplayer vs can now add the players music to it later?]

Is this feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

i've been playing jn for a while and gotten up some tiers considerably now [woo!], all the requirements for most unlocks feel very reasonable with nats character/the time sink needed, but the requirements for unlocking music specifically always nagged at me. it takes a somewhat considerable amount of time to get over that first hurdle of normal tier even when maxxing out your progress for the day [which sucks the fun out of it].

it feels like itd make more sense that having at least some degree of control over music give new players incentive to keep her open/come back to hang out and interact with her in meaningful ways [regardless of if theres more topics available to them]

its also a bit of a frustration im seeing when i try introducing the mod to other people [becuz this mod needs a bigger fandom!] eventually they mute the loop of her default music and keep to silence, and one even changed the default music file outright when he wanted to hear something else, so i thought id perhaps bring to attention to see how other people feel

Honestly I rlly agree with this and like this idea. Even just I think toning down the xylophone music to a more softer sound with some editing I think would be amazing. Imo it's just a lil loud and can get repetitive when heard as often as it takes for her to get music open even if player is logging in and staying for an hr each day :O

I think our preferred approach here would be to introduce a greater variety of music (and adjusting our existing tracks as is mentioned) rather than begin shifting unlock requirements around, and work on adding additional content (as is our current focus) to fill the gaps - we aren't against adjusting unlock requirements, but the concern is that this leads to masking the problem by making content front-heavy, with less to look forward to in future sessions.

Music for the mod is a particular challenge as the team currently does not have that talent available, so would need to be commissioned specifically for the game; and seeing as how the mod is self-sufficient this would need to be funded from the team member's own finances.

In the short term, we can look at softening the existing track to hopefully make it a little less grating, and redouble our research into finding a composer for a new track or two. Given the custom music topic is already at a fairly minimum unlock state (only requiring happy affinity, which with the new updates to affinity can be achieved more readily), we'd likely keep this as is.

that sounds completely fair, the only reason i mentioned touching the tier for custom music was unlocked was because i wanst sure if changing music at all would be force-tied into custom music being added, but if a player can choose between some default music alongside her main theme off the bat, then thered be no reason to touch it ^^

wish i could help with the getting-the-music part though, maybe some of the original ddlc/ddlc+ can work if ip allows it? at least the v basic natsuki themes, non-doki specific themes like main menus, and the original spaceroom music could be good fillers until composers are found

I believe we introduced the Spaceroom track relatively recently, but good point - we can look at including a few more tracks from the base game. Unfortunately DDLC+ is still off limits as far as we're aware; the licence is extremely strict regarding what can be used - I think it amounts to no more than a few specific graphics (that were teased before the release of the game). Piece By Piece and Strawberry Peppermint would be awesome, but our hands are tied for those.
