FT8 Presets #2

Closed timkirby closed 1 year ago

timkirby commented 2 years ago

First of all, thank you for a really excellent plugin!

I'm wondering if it would be possible to add a few entries into the Preset selection on the FT8 plugin.

24.915 40.680 (experimental, but interesting frequency) 50.313 (is the primary 6m frequency) 144.174 432.174 1296.174

I doubt many people would use the VHF/UHF frequencies, but you never know!

Thanks so much for your work, Tim

Tim, No problem to add these frequencies, although you have to wait a while since I am "on the move" for another 2 weeks

Just thinking, the list of freqs will be quite lengthy, wouldn't it be a better option to have a short default list and an option for the user to add his/hers favourite ft8 frequencies? Of course the list would be stored between invocations of the plugin. Options then would be to (a) let the user type in a freq or (b) the user instructs to add the currently selected freq to the list Option b is the simplest one, but each of the options is implementable. Removing an added freq from the list is something I have to figure out how to do that. Some time next week I will be at home and can look into implementing this

Back home I created a version with 2 additional buttons (still undocumented) button 1 (presets) add - when touched - the current frequency, rounded to KHz, to the list button 2 (delete) removes the last added frequency from the list

I have 4 frequencies selected to be always in the list

you can give it a try a give some feedback

Hi Jan,Thank you! The buttons add and remove the presets very nicely. The odd thing with the new version was that I didn’t get any decodes! Is decoding working for you?Switched back to the old version and decoding is ok. TimOn 19 Sep 2022, at 18:13, JvanKatwijk @.***> wrote: Back home I created a version with 2 additional buttons (still undocumented) button 1 (presets) add - when touched - the current frequency, rounded to KHz, to the list button 2 (delete) removes the last added frequency from the list

Something stupid I did with some files, just before I left. Went back to the previous git commit and re-entered some mods in the message decoding Seems to work well now

Fantastic, Jan - thank you for sorting it out.

I will test a little bit later on today and let you know how it goes.

Hello Jan,

Interesting thoughts.

I had also wondered whether the presets could be driven by a file which the plugin could read and see which of the presets was wanted. You could maybe comment out those frequencies you didn’t want

eg

1840 3575 5355 7075 10136 14075 18100 21075 24915 28075 40680 50313 ;50323 ;50333 ;70154 144174 432174 1296174

Does that help, or make things worse :-)

Thanks, as always, for your hard work on this!

I seem to have fixed it. Apparently did something stupid just before I left for holidays. Going back to the "previous" version and added some mods from the last version, as well as adding a "preset" and a "delete" button seems to work

I'll adapt documentation later this week

Trying to understand: Say you have a file with the - for you - interesting frequencies and you want that file to download to replace the list of presets that was - at that time - maintained by the plugin, i.e. an update of the presetlist by the data in an external file?

Yes, that’s what I was thinking, that you could load the frequencies - or maintain them in a text file. But the solution you have made is simple and works well, so probably no need for any changes.

I did want to ask you a question about the output!

I see a lot of data lines such as

F4EAD R3KF AA24 TA2MN W6NWS AA29

At first, I thought this might be busted locator data, but I realise that it is most probably some way that the report information is encoded, as very often the next line I see from the stations is RR73 or 73. I haven’t been brave enough to look at the WSJT-X source to see if this is the case. I wondered how difficult it would be to decode that into the actual report (eg F4EAD R3KF +3 or TA2MN W6NWS -15)

It doesn’t really matter, of course but I was interested in what was happening.

The plugin is running very well indeed, and has been running on 10m with an indoor loop, 24x7 for sometime now. Thank you very much for all your work - it’s a really useful resource.

Have you ever thought of making a similar plugin for the WSPR mode :-) :-)

Very best wishes,

Tim

Hi Tim

I am just a simple programmer with an interest in radio. I asked several people about the meaning of the AA.. texts, Some were reporting that it was location information, which seems strange since it is south pole area, others did not know.

In decoding I follow the rules from what I consider as a defining document, and that leads to AA RR and location info

I was experimenting a little with your suggestion of using a file as input to the preset list, you could try it out. The frequencies specified are in KHz, just one frequency on a single line

A button is added to the second line in the widget, when touched a file menu appears and you can select a text file, a regular text file, with ".txt" as file extension If the file can be opened, the non standard elelents in the presetlist are removed and replaced by the frequencies specified in the file.

Hi Jan,

I think you are a bit more than a simple programmer - you have done a wonderful job!

No, the AA tags are definitely not location information, so I think it’s some encoding of report information, I’m not clever enough to understand how this works, but I did find this document, which may well be similar on the same as the one you worked on https://physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/k1jt/FT4_FT8_QEX.pdf https://physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/k1jt/FT4_FT8_QEX.pdf Unfortunately on a quick scan, it does not offer me, at least, any clues of why the reports might be represented in the way that we are seeing.

Thank you very much for working on the solution with the file. I am going to try it now! I will let you know.

Very best wishes,

Tim

"Simple " in the sense that while I know how to write a program, programming usually only makes sense in some application domain and although I learned passed years lots about signal processing, I am still an amateur in that domain.

Now about the plugin. I was thinking, while reading in a file with preferred frequencies is nice, the next thing you do is during processing alter the list of frequencies (or add new ones), so it would make sense to have some means to save the current list of presets as well.

From a programming point of view these or small modifications, I'll probably change the button to a combobox with a "save" and a "load" option, I'll see to it tomorrow

From a programming point of view these or small modifications, I'll probably change the button to a combobox with a "save" and a "load" option, I'll see to it tomorrow

Hi Jan,

I think you are a bit more than a simple programmer - you have done a wonderful job!

No, the AA tags are definitely not location information, so I think it’s some encoding of report information, I’m not clever enough to understand how this works, but I did find this document, which may well be similar on the same as the one you worked on https://physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/k1jt/FT4_FT8_QEX.pdf < https://physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/k1jt/FT4_FT8_QEX.pdf> Unfortunately on a quick scan, it does not offer me, at least, any clues of why the reports might be represented in the way that we are seeing.

Thank you very much for working on the solution with the file. I am going to try it now! I will let you know.

Very best wishes,

Tim

Hi Tim

I am just a simple programmer with an interest in radio. I asked several people about the meaning of the AA.. texts, Some were reporting that it was location information, which seems strange since it is south pole area, others did not know.

In decoding I follow the rules from what I consider as a defining document, and that leads to AA RR and location info

https://www.dropbox.com/s/6hirtts65c512nq/SDRunoPlugin_ft8.dll?dl=0

I was experimenting a little with your suggestion of using a file as input to the preset list, you could try it out. The frequencies specified are in KHz, just one frequency on a single line

A button is added to the second line in the widget, when touched a file menu appears and you can select a text file, a regular text file, with ".txt" as file extension If the file can be opened, the non standard elelents in the presetlist are removed and replaced by the frequencies specified in the file.

It seems to work

Hi Jan,

Yes, that’s what I was thinking, that you could load the frequencies

  • or maintain them in a text file.

Tim

The button in the previous version is replaced by a combobox, giving you a choice between reading in a list of presets ir writing out the current list of presets into a txt file
