Orion Heatshield dont protect the Orion CM #117

In the reentry (any angle) the material ablative is fixed (don't go down, always 720) and charred ablator is 0. And always the hostest part is the Orion CM. Seems that the Heatshield isn't working properly.

I'm having the same problem. Did u find a way to fix it?

Tho the ablative shielding wouldn't go down bc the capsule well blow up from overheating before the atmosphere is thick enough to erode the ablator. If u use a different capsule or just watch the shield go by itself the ablator goes down as normal.

For the overheating I think it's caused by the model of the capsule being bigger than it should be (not just bigger than the texture), in both height and width, and clipping into the heat shield (any heat sheild below a 7m diameter). Which would cause game to think the capsule would be the first part in the airstream and thus overheating it. U can see this if u have deadly re-entry installed activate the thermal data in action groups toggle in the cheat menu. Then look in the action groups of the heat shield and capsules.

U will see that the capsule will gain heat will the heat shield doesn't and acts occluded. Which is what I see at least.

U can also see this by replacing the heat shield with a 7m one and offset it down so that the capsule appears to float over it in the editor and in game. Then try re-entry again u will see the the capsule doesn't over heat. At least for me.

Also I'm not a programmer or modeler so idk how to fix it. Pls help.

This seems to also be happening to the Apollo CM too

MKaboo commented 2 years ago

They said on the RO discord it was due to the heatshield being, possibly, too small

Capkirk123 commented 1 year ago

This is due to an issue with the model/drag cubes(?) of the Orion CM that cause it to be unable to occlude the Orion CM.
