Import biomass: Jena 2015-2017 UPDATE #224

Open KW529 opened 3 years ago

KW529 commented 3 years ago

Updating subplot to all be A, but had to remove and then re-upload data to do this. Changing to A since each plot had it's own subplot, but those subplots are not the same in the cover file.

Hi Christiane,

Thanks again for sending this update! I was also curious about the change to your first drought treatment application date. You previously listed this as 2015-05-01, but in these new files, it is listed as 2015-03-15. Which is the correct date?

Thanks so much!

Best,

Kate

P.S. Are the "herbs" you all list herbaceous or woody?

Reply sent 9-23-2020:

Dear Kate,

We installed our roofs on 2015-03-15 (mid-March is start of the growing season in our region); the "herbs" listed in the files are all herbaceous species. Sorry for confusion.

Best, Christiane

Email received on 07-28-2022:

Dear Kate,

thanks a lot for all your work with the analysis and writing - the manuscript is impressive. Nevertheless, I am still a bit concerned that the results for the site "jenadrt.de" with a small positive effect of drought on ANPP are correct. The one-year drought is 2016, but I am not sure if the analysed productivity data are those from 2016 (the year of the first drought) or the next year (2017). Unfortunately, our biomass data from 2016 are not complete (as indicated in our database file we lost samples). However, it seems that the biomass data used in the analysis are those from 2017. Then, the small positive effect would be true when only the biomass data from the first harvest (June) are used. ANPP, however, would be the sum of the June + September harvest for our site. Our site is a grassland mown two times per year (June and September). Thus, we harvest two times to get annual productivity. Maximum standing biomass is usually in June, and we observed indeed an "overshooting" in productivity under the roofs in June, which was mostly caused by annual spring plants which reached high abundances when the perennial grass species lost in abundance due to drought. I think it would be ok to use the time with maximum standing biomass in the analyses (but this is not the same as ANPP). I hope that I do not cause too much confusion.

I wish you the best for the future with your new job; and thanks again for all your work with DroughtNet.

Best regards, Christiane

Hi Christiane,

Thanks so much for your participation in IDE and for reviewing the manuscript! For your site, we add together the ANPP values from June and September.

We have the first treatment date for your site set as 2015-03-15 after your follow-up email (see below) to some questions I had about the first treatment date. Is 2015-03-15 the correct first treatment date for your site? If not, I suspect that may be the source of your concerns with the results in the manuscript. image

Dear Kate,

I am very sorry - this is my mistake. We installed the roofs on 2016-03-15. The data from 2015 is our pre-treatment year. Thus, you need to remove our site from the manuscript because in 2016 (the first treatment year, we accidentally lost a large bag with biomass samples from our harvest in June before they were weighed). I really apologize that I cause additional work to change analyses in the final stage of the manuscript.

Best regards, Christiane

Need to update the first treatment date and remove the 2016 data from the database.
