He fought for Chen and helped take over southern Fujian for him. In 1923, he wanted to defect back to Sun's side before Chen appeased him by giving him more autonomy. In 1924, he was defeated by Fang Benren and surrendered to him. Before the KMT northern expedition, Lai was convinced by the KMT to join them. However it was discovered that he was being contacted by Sun Chuanfang to betray the KMT and was subsequently executed in Dec 1927.

Ma Xiaojun (1881-1959) Born in Rong, Guangxi Proposed Role: Army Reformer Could help reconcile Guangdong and Guangxi after the civil war? KMT-aligned Old Guangxi general who taught most of the Old Guangxi generals (Bai Chongxi, Huang Shaohong, Huang Xuchu, Xia Wei, etc). He defected from the Old Guangxi and joined Guangdong, he subsequently left his forces (which later joined up with Li Zongren, forming the core of the New Guangxi Clique) and became a senior staff officer of the Guangzhou nationalist government until 1929 (possibly due to the Chiang-Gui War earlier that year).
