Before the liberation(1951), today's Barkam/Markang was located on a riverbank, with only the current National Culture Palace, which was a Camping Temple owned by Qogze/Zhuokeji Tusi(native chieftain) Suo Guanying.
The name of Barkam, meaning the Tibetan "place of strong fire", came from this Camping Temple.

Historically, Barkam belonged to the Somang Tusi (Chinese: 梭磨土司; pinyin: Suōmó Tǔsī), one of the Gyalrong Tusi. The area was administered as three units: Zhuokeji (Chinese: 卓克基; pinyin: Zhuōkèjī), Zonggag (Chinese: 松岗; pinyin: Sōnggǎng), and Tamba (Chinese: 党坝; pinyin: Dǎngbà).
It was not until 1953 that Barkam/Markang became administrative divisions(County-level Office→County→County-level City, Town).
Also, Zhuokeji Tusi Official Village is one of the major historical sites in today's Barkam.
