Quick questions HOI4 version: Latest Kaiserreich version: Latest

Describe the specific change you would like: There are a number of anachronisms I noticed with flags throughout Latin America. So to start, Cuba.

Flag_of_Cuba_(sky_blue) svg

The flag should be a much brighter shade of blue, as the darker shade didn't come into use until 1959 with the Cuban Revolution.

Flag_of_Guatemala_(1871-1968) svg

So with Guatemala's flag, the state emblem was a bit different, and it wasn't redesigned until 1968.

Flag_of_Panama svg

With Panama's flag, the dark blue should actually be its color, as the light blue was only used from 1903-1904.

Flag_of_Paraguay_(1842-1954) svg

Next comes Paraguay. The emblem seems to be wrong, as currently it's the one adopted in the 1990s.

Flag_of_Bohemia-1 svg

Next, I'd argue that the embroidery on Bohemia's flag should be removed. I'm not sure if this was done to distinguish it from Galicia Lodmeria's flag or not, but I don't think it's necessary, as the real flag was a lot simpler.

Flag_of_Bulgaria svg

So with Bulgaria's royal flag, I'd recommend getting rid of the embroidery by having the tricolor just be the regular flag, as it was officially. I understand that this was done as a way to distinguish monarchist Bulgaria from the republic, but it's not really historical. A compromise option could be creating a new Bulgarian flag like this with the royal Bulgarian coat of arms. I think it would look a lot better, and a in-lore explanation could be added as to why it was changed.

Flag_of_Hungary_(1915-1918,_1919-1946) svg

Finally, I'd suggest changing Hungary's flag by getting rid of the angels. The official flag normally didn't use them, and I'd argue this flag is a lot more clean. I don't think the embroidery is necessary.

Explain the reasoning behind this actionable change: Fixes errors with the map's flags and makes them more clean/historical.

I'll respond to each of the countries below with thoughts based on my understanding of the flag's history. Just noting this too that the devs of each country might have different views or would like to retain specific versions for gameplay so it might be worth consulting them before we implement any changes.

  1. Cuban Flag - I don't agree with this view, I have recently been reading up on this and did a deep dive into the flag's history and appearance. There are no consistent or legitimate sources of the light blue version of the flag being utilised until 1959 besides two old websites that throw the statement into their overall history of the flag. I've tried my best to verify them and I have not found anything. While searching I found additional evidence that points to the dark blue turquoise being in use before and after 1959 as shown here https://imgur.com/a/FbGNkKN. Additionally, I also found the governmental decree of the flag from 1906 that provides a written and visual description of the Cuba flag that further verifies that it was indeed utilising a dark blue turquoise https://curiosity.lib.harvard.edu/latin-american-pamphlet-digital-collection/catalog/43-990093643480203941

My best guess is that someone has misinterpreted the wording of the presidential decree and thought that the turquoise described in the flag was meant to be of a lighter shade but I don't know how as the decree also provides pretty clear depictions of the end. Regardless I don't think the flag should be changed to have the light blue version as it has no historical basis (from what I can see).

  1. Guatemala - I would agree with this change, I've found several variations in official representations between 1916-1946 that depict the COA being different and larger on the flag and of a similar size to the one provided. I think it was discussed within the team already but I don't think it's been adopted.

  2. Panama - This seems to be a case of an unstandardised colour. I've looked through old source books and other official documents and nothing shows or provides a consistent visual depiction as to what color the red or blue should be. If we wanted we could change it to the darker colours variant but they seem to be based on a 2017 government decree so it might be good to get the head of Panama to weigh in.

  3. Paraguay - I don't agree that there is an issue with the coat of arms depiction as the only difference between the different decade versions is the ratio. I do think we can update the flag though as it currently uses an older version with HTML colors.

  4. Bohemia - While correct, I think this was a style choice by the lead dev of the region as otherwise, Bohemia looks too similar to it's neighbouring nations specifically Poland and Galicia. I don't think this is something we would change but I am happy to have @Vidyaorszag make the final call.

  5. Bulgaria - Whilst also correct, I think this was done for gameplay reasons more so to distinguish the political factions of Bulgaria. We could adjust the design if we wanted but I would need the blessing of the Bulgaria dev before we did.

  6. Hungary - This is correct from my understanding the old kingdom didn't often utilise the angel variant of the Hungarian coat of arms. Might be a case for you Vidya since you have a better understanding of AH history after the Weltkrieg.
