What should this feature enhancement do?

Let the user zoom to distances in the thousands of kilometers above Earth.
This feature would be very handy for showing the current position of highly 
ecliptic orbits of 
satellites in real-time using GE. 

See http://sat.rummet.dk   as a usage case.

Are there any known workarounds that produce the similar results?

Not as far as I know.

Possible Issues:

In order to avoid confusion in "Earth-centric" information viewing, it would be 
nice to add a 
switch to toggle the max altitude at a per. session basis.
