GPaste is continuously and automatically copying some image and using up RAM #352

System: Ubuntu 20.04

I have been using GPaste since quite some time, but this problem has started very recently. GPaste is copying some image continuously, every second, automatically. I don't know what the image is because when I try to paste it, nothing is pasted. But the daemon is using up extremely high memory, sometimes consuming 95% of the RAM. One day, it took up so much memory that I had to reboot my PC using alt+ sysrq + REISUB.

A screen video is available here, where you can see that it is continuously copying something every second (notice the timestamp beside the copied items).

The maximum memory is set to 30 MB, but when this issue occurs, this setting is ignored.

I am not a Linux developer, but will be happy to provide any other information if needed.

Some more information to help in debugging:

GPaste version: 3.36.3

I can confirm that this problem occurs whenever I copy some image. Whether it is a screenshot or an image that I copy from an image editor, GPaste keeps making multiple copies of that same image in the memory. If I switch off image support, the problem stops.

Is this related to #262?

mutageneral commented 2 years ago

IDK if this is related but I looked at my RAM usage and saw this.... 3GB.... image

Yeah ok no, I looked at the video and that doesn't happen to me. Spoke too soon! Went back through the history and found a shit ton of images copied over and over. When I selected it, it started duplicating again. It was an image I copied from twitter from a chromium based browser. The thing is, I just opened the same browser again and went on Twitter and copied another image and noting bad happens?? Strange stuff...
