Microcontroller #1

I got the PCB printed that is on the website and when the PCB came in the mail, there was no Microcontroller on any of the boards. I was going to order the microcontroller separately but I am not sure what to order. Any help on this would be awesome :) Thank you

Hey there! We're happy to hear that you found our project. We're also sorry to hear that there may have been a mix-up somewhere in the ordering process for your PCB. Can you answer a few questions for us so we can figure out if this was a failure on our part or on the PCB manufacturer's part?

  1. Which PCB did you order?
  2. Where did you order your PCBs from?
  3. Did you pay for PCB assembly, and if so, are there other components on the PCB but just the micro controller is missing?
  4. Since you want to order microcontrollers and solder them yourself, which country/region are you in so we can suggest the best options for ordering the necessary parts?

Hopefully we can solve this for you and either fix our PCB files, or improve our instructions so that something like this doesn't accidentally happen in the future!

Hi! Thank you for the quick response,

  1. I ordered the V4N4G0N board using the gerber files on your website.
  2. I ordered the board from JLCPCB.com
  3. I paid for the PCB assembly and only the micro controller is missing from what I saw.
  4. I am in Colorado, United States.

After reviewing the PCB files, everything looks correct, but it seems that JLCPCB is currently out of stock of the ATmega32u4-AU. Unfortunately the V4N4G0N PCB uses this IC, which is likely why it wasn't included. JLC's interface generally lets you order things even if all parts are not available, which can lead to situations like this.

We'll be sure to add a disclaimer to the ordering instructions to make sure people are, at the least, aware of something like this happening if parts are out of stock. We do our best to use the most available parts but we are ultimately at the will of the PCB manufacturers available inventory at the time.

As far as ordering a replacement, it looks like Digi-Key and Mouser have decent stock at a relatively reasonable price for low quantities.

Other vendors may have the part at a lower cost, just be sure to avoid the RC variant of the AU IC as it does not come with a bootloader, which can complicate the flashing process unless you have the necessary equipment.

As far as soldering goes, you'll want to make sure that the debossed dot in the corner of the IC is at the same corner as the line pictured in the right corner (3 o'clock) of this image: image

Let us know if you have any other questions or concerns!

You're the best! thank you so much for the detailed response :) ill get everything together once I get this microcontroller installed. Ill reach out again if I run into any issues. thank you again!
