Desktop Task Automation #25

Problem

We manage thousands of desktops for our customers. A lot of times there's very routine work to do on a great number of these desktops, whether it's an upgrade, a fix, or just some kind of a modification... We need to be able to automate this labor so that we can get more done more quickly.

Proposal

Our current RMM tool, Continuum, has scripting capabilities. From their website:

Continuum provides an extensive library of pre-created scripts you can use to help automate tasks and monitor systems. No programming is required. All scripts are deployed through an easy-to-use visual web interface. Deploy to a single machine or across multiple sites on-demand or on a scheduled basis. Use scripts to standardize user configurations across any desktop running RMM. Download application installers directly from the Internet or deploy locally to consolidate Internet bandwidth.

Is the suggested problem really a significant enough problem to warrant learning and training staff on the scripting abilities? Is there really that much repetition in the work we do?

Is there a way to report on repetition, either via Continuum or Autotask, or some other method? Indeed, how much repetition is done among tech staff?

I'm not really understanding the problem statement on this. Are we looking at what tools we have to run scripts and automated actions, or are we looking for ways to identify repetitive tasks? Perhaps we need to set some definitions around automation for the purposes of this discussion?

I think we already understand that Continuum has the scripting capabilities. This issue is about taking advantage of that capability, but of course first understanding if there really is a need for it.

It's been a while, but I've heard it talked about a number of times that Continuum has the capability, but that people aren't using it.

So this issue is really about getting people to use it, assuming of course, that it really is something that people should be using.
