as stated in that thread it seems this was something on my end, working now:

$ nix-channel --update
unpacking channels...
created 2 symlinks in user environment
$ nix-env -i steam
warning: there are multiple derivations named 'steam'; using the first one
installing 'steam'
building '/nix/store/ffyxxcmv10zlddkdnksg4sw2d35x13gg-user-environment.drv'...
created 2 symlinks in user environment
