I decided to go with simply sorting the notes by creation date for now instead of updated date.

Also fixed a couple of issues I encountered:

Checkboxes were toggle-able on note previews which made long clicking or simply opening a note frustrating because a checkbox might get toggled.
Selection pinning wasn't working because it checked whether ALL notes were pinned instead of just the selected notes.
