As you may be aware, Seagate introduced the Kinetic open storage protocol this past year to very strong industry interest. With Kinetic, Seagate has embraced an open approach by open sourcing the Kinetic APIs and libraries, and actively encouraging industry collaboration. We are thrilled that many software and hardware partners, as well as object storage customers, have already been actively collaborating in the development and deployment of the protocol.
We are committed to making Kinetic a truly community-driven project that can become an industry standard object storage protocol that meets and enables the needs of all ecosystem constituents. As such we are now taking the final step of establishing an open Project Management Committee, in order that the Kinetic code can be advanced under the governance of the broader community. We believe it is in the best interests of all constituents (device, system, software, customer) to advance this important object storage enabling technology in an open manner, one that enables fast pace of innovation, transparent collaboration and therefore - ultimately - standardization.
We invite you to join us as founding members of the community and representatives of the Project Management Committee.
Draft bylaws of the Committee are available for anyone wishing to participate in the community. We would like to get your response about interest in participating in the community, and set up an initial meeting to review the draft bylaws. Following agreement on the bylaws we can then move forward together with formal establishment of the project. (This will be a business meeting, with any/ all required legal work to follow as part of formal establishment.)
The initial meeting will be held on Jan. 8th between 8:30-10:30 am PST in San Francisco (exact details to follow).
We ask the following:
Please respond by no later than 12/12 with your interest in participating in the project as well as your availability to participate in a meeting on either the 7th or 8th of January. We will most likely hold the meeting in the San Francisco Bay Area, but remote participation is of course welcome. (If these dates prove challenging, we can work with you all to identify the right date.)
Please feel free to send additional comments/ questions ahead of the initial meeting.
Requests for the proposed community bylaws, as well as responses and comments should be sent to shai.tsur@seagate.com
We are very much looking forward to working with all of you to advance this technology and enable the massive opportunity and market need that sits in front of all of us in the object storage space.
Many thanks in advance,
Shai Tsur
