inability to update: "Firefox is being updated by another instance" messsage

the simple installation of TGM addon causes Firefox to be unable to update
itself (i've checked before and after the installation). Have also tried
uninstalling every other addon so TGM is definitively the culprit

so it's the contrast with another tab-related addon?
Could you please try installing these:

Multiple Tab Handler
Tab Mix Plus
Vertical Tabs

and report the results?

I have no scenario where TGM or another addon could block a Fx Update. If Fx
runs the updater copy all files to a temp update folder and on next Restart the
files will be replaced.

There is only one possibility. The Fx needs to much time for closing and have
still open files if the update process needs access to them for replace these
files...But from my point of view, if Fx restarts the window disappeared, HDD
activity for writing his files and apply the update at Restart all in correct
order here. And my session needs also some time for closing.

You should check what happens if you not click restart after downloading the
update but closing the Fx manually and waiting some time if HDD activity is
finished + start Fx manually again to apply the update.
