The non-modal inserting vs overwriting edit methodology is confusing and not useful. It's very rare to want to insert / remove bytes as the absolute position of the data is usually very important. Accidentally inserting a byte might cause the file to become corrupt.
A more modal approach would be appropriate (maybe make use of that INS key).
