When running sudo clyde -S for any package/group not in a repo, after getting to the "group not found, searching AUR..." step, clyde exits, and any further package operations (clyde or pacman) require a manual sudo rm /var/lib/pacman/db.lck.
It seems that this happens when there is no network connection.
