About

@OpenSourceTB was chosen as a case study, as the researchers have access to the account and are able to alter the tweeting behaviour of the account in an attempt to improve its reach in the open source drug discovery community. To assess whether altered tweeting behaviour impacts the role of the account in its networks, data needed to be collected on "who @OpenSourceTB talks to" (and, equally importantly, who talks to it). Therefore, data was collected on every user who has interacted (defined as a follow, tweet, retweet, or mention) with @OpenSourceTB.

Data Collection Protocol

Data collection began on 24-08-21. The Twitter User Network 01 - standard worksheet option was used to import followers and other interacting users for @OpenSourceTB.

The data has been inspected and a codebook is being developed in order to classify users, using inductive coding techniques.

Categories

Focus in drug discovery and/or development

Currently, this list of disciplines involved in drug discovery/development is being used to define the category "Focus in drug discovery and/or development".

The "related sciences" have not been included, with the exception of bio- and chem-informatics. Medicine and vetenarian services have also been excluded from the Biology section.

Pharmacy/pharmaceutical industry have been added.

Defining scientists

The Australian Business Industries codes have been used to define "science". Any occupation that would likely fall into the category 61900 - Professional, scientific and technical services is counted as a scientific occupation.

Science communicators and educators

Science communicators and educators will be placed in the "member of the public category" unless they are also identified as a scientist of some kind. If so, their focus will be assigned as per usual.

Vaccine development

Vaccines are generally classified as a type of pharmaceutical. Therefore, organisations or individuals concerned in developing vaccines are considered to be involved in drug discovery and development. Organisations and individuals concerned in delivering/administering vaccines are considered to be involved in medical and health professions.
