  1. Dissolved SM (798.2 mg, 2.91 mmol) in NaOH (2.5 M, 5 mL)
  2. Stirred at rt for 30 minutes. Did not dissolve entirely.

TLC indicated reaction was occuring but not complete.

  1. Heated to 40 C and stirred for a further 1.5 hrs

TLC indicated reaction still not complete. Spot assumed to be product has also shifted position.

Left: reaction after 30 minutes. Right: reaction after 2 hours total reaction time. Ethyl acetate in hexanes, 30/70.

  1. Turned off heat and stirring overnight

Small peak at 169.03 [M-H]-. No clear sign of SM (mass = 274).

Decided to work up anyway. Extracted with DCM (3 x 25 mL) and dried over mag sulphate.

vial: 15.4026 Full vial: 15.5256 Mass: 123 mg (0.723 mmol, 25%)

Peak at 169.02 [M-H]- confirms presence of product - uncertain about peak at 135.07.
