  1. Dissolved KSCN (4.32 g, 44.4 mmol) in acetone (150 mL)
  2. Added benzoyl chloride (4.7 mL, 40.7 mmol)
  3. Stirred at 60 C for 40 minutes
  4. Added 2-amino-4-methylpyridine (4.00 g)
  5. Stirred at 60 C for 1 hr until TLC indicated completion

Usual workup - see Step 1.

Beaker: 34.1564 Full beaker: 43.1066 Mass: 8.9502 g (33.0 mmol, 89%)

Peaks at 272.14 [M+H]+, 294.15 [M+Na]+ and 564.96 [2M+Na]- confirm presence of product.

500 MHz NMR

1H NMR (500 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ 13.25 (s, 1H), 11.69 (s, 1H), 8.66 (s, 1H), 8.30 (d, J = 5.1 Hz, 1H), 8.03 – 7.97 (m, 2H), 7.72 – 7.65 (m, 1H), 7.59 (d, J = 7.5 Hz, 2H), 7.12 (s, 1H), 2.38 (s, 3H).
