By keeping compatibility with latest version, users are able to make use of latest features and to update to latest versions. Not so much should be necessary to keep compatible: https://github.com/squizlabs/PHP_CodeSniffer/wiki/Version-3.0-Upgrade-Guide

I will try to provide a working pull request today.
