Is there an existing issue for this?

Additional Information

I was disapponted after my entire project just disappeared. There were 4 folders of 10-12 requests each. After I closed and opened the program, most of the requests and folders were gone! I was very angry, very angry. All my hard work had gone to waste. Before that, I sometimes noticed that something was wrong with the program, or some requests were deleted, or the address bar deleted its content, this happened after closing the program. And here came this terrible bug!

I fixed the issue by creating a new workspace, and then I copied the wrk_xxxx id from insomnia.Workspace.db and then replaced this ID with the old wrk_old in all files that start with insomnia*

Just upgraded to Insomnia 8. When the app restarted after the upgrade it appeared as if all my data was gone. I'd kept all data offline. I was only able to access my existing data after setting an E2EE password and signing-in to the app.

Boztown commented 1 year ago

I also upgraded to Insomnia 8. At first I didn't want to sign in so I chose "Use Scratchpad". When I did none of my data was there. I figured I was being forced to sign up now, so I did. And now still I'm back to an empty slate. I just had local data, offline. Probably about 200 requests. I didn't really ever try to back it up because it was a bit messy had a lot of endpoint stuff for old projects of mine that are defunct. But, still... there might be a nasty bug here...

apeisa commented 1 year ago

Same happened to me. Updated insomnia (it was autoupdate of some sort), had to login (didn't like it, but whatever), created account using GitHub login, added E2EE passphrase and then - all data gone (happily used Insomnia for a year before that). Can those old requests be somewhere to be saved?

Ok, right after writing this I found out those under "New Document" name.

comment from @filfreire https://github.com/Kong/insomnia/issues/5167#issuecomment-1317415546 solves this for v8.0.0 on m2 mac

afavieres commented 1 year ago

The version 8.0 wiped out all my requests and signing up is not an option for me. Do you have any solution for this? Once I get my data back I am never going back to Insomnia, I prefer an application that have my data in a better regards, thanks.

NikhithVasa commented 1 year ago

Hope this walkthrough helps too. In my case, I updated my insomnia through the ubuntu snap, and I lost all the collections I had. The solution was:

1 - Go to the personal folder, enable see hidden files. 2- Enter .config/Insomnia, and copy everything inside. 3 - Go to the newly installed insomnia, and in the help tab - show app data folder. 4 - Enter insomnia, and paste everything, overwrite. 5 - Close and open insomnia and that's it.

I hope it helped you. =)

I dont have .config/Insomnia folder, can you help navigate to this folder? TY

itsa-sh commented 1 year ago

I literally received a popup 20 times requesting me to "Restart and Update" or "Skip Update" so Skip doesn't work.

Post update i'm forced to create an account and login, or use local scratch pad which doesn't work, doesn't seem compatible with my older projects. This product was cleaner and simpler than Postman, now it's much worse.

lance-nesn commented 1 year ago

Yo Kong, where are all of my env and collection settings after upgrading to 8.0? Is it time to switch back to Postman?

hvitoi commented 1 year ago

+1 that got all my collections wiped after a refusal to log-in. That is really nasty.

afavieres commented 1 year ago

I have found an install for an older version. I copied the db files there and removed the scratch one with an editor as explained before in this thread. That gave me back my requests. Now I am trying to export my collection to a format that could work in other programs, but the plugins and the Har option are failing.

josdirksen commented 1 year ago

Same for me, but apparently there was a backups folder in the App Data folder which contained a backup from a couple of days ago. Imported that one, and at least only lost a couple of days of work.

Moving away from Insomnia, since this product doesn't seem to be the simple REST client I liked anymore.

bb-nik commented 1 year ago

This is a horrible experience!

Lost everything and wasted almost 2 hours trying to find new info!

How hard is it to consolidate prior work into new version!

Here's how I fixed it...

1) Uninstall version 8 or above! Be sure to only remove the app and not the support files. I use use Cleanmymac which has an uninstall feature. I left the support files which I figured has prior DB.

2) Downloaded the last update before version 8

https://github.com/Kong/insomnia/releases/tag/core%402023.5.8

3) Install

4) Everything came back.

5) Turn off automatic updates...

Thank you!

KerickHowlett commented 1 year ago

@bb-nik I applied your recommendation yesterday, which worked (despite me having installed the app through Homebrew), but when I went to use it the next day, I tried running an API call, but it didn't work for some strange reason, so I hard closed it to boot it back up, it updated itself without my permission.

And yes, I had the "Automatically download and install updated" option unchecked.

chennighan commented 1 year ago

Just got ultra burned by this. Absolute trashware. Back to postman I go.

nathan-mill commented 1 year ago

Another "me too" post. Had to reboot and when Insomnia re-launched it updated itself and deleted absolutely everything in the process. Project data is clearly still there in Application Support but Insomnia doesn't load any of it and refuses to show me anything but the (empty) scratchpad and the nagging upsell modals. Gonna be deleting Insomnia once I figure out how to fish what I need out of the backups.

fullheart commented 11 months ago

I too lost all requests after upgrading to Version 8.x.

I restored the requests in an other app: https://github.com/Kong/insomnia/issues/5559#issuecomment-1798326290

ChristianEscobar commented 11 months ago

I was able to restore my lost workspace by clicking on Insomnia > Preferences then in the Data tab, under Untracked projects clicking on the Select an organization drop down, selecting my Personal Workspace and then clicking on the Move button

nikhiljain12 commented 10 months ago

What an absolute disaster! I've been trying to recover my lost data for the last 2 hours. There was a backup file with insomnia.Requests.db but that seems to have been corrupted now. Insomnia is writing to all the copies of this backup file as well, I have no idea how it is doing that. The workspace/project/folder/collection organization is so confusing and messed up.

And lastly, I created a brand new collection with 1 request in it, and Insomnia created 5000 new Request records in Requests.db. Absolutely insane

nathan-mill commented 10 months ago

Dig through the past issues, count the number of times the CEO has done this exact same thing over the past few years and make an educated decision.

copiri-six commented 10 months ago

This is a horrible experience!

+1 For that!! What a wreck of an upgrade process.

Just chiming in to say that this response worked for me. Be sure to make sure that automatic updates are turned OFF so that this dumpster fire of a program doesn't trash your data again.

I really liked Insomnia before Kong took over... but I'm really considering moving to Postman after all these "create an account so we can monetize your data" issues.

My solution: Create new : Request Collection Screenshot 2023-01-02 at 12 40 29

close insomnia.

open in the editor: insomnia.workspace.db and copy the _id of the newly created collection. then open insomnia.request.db and replace the parent_id with the one you've just copied. Start insomnia. In my case, all request was back. Give it the try.

Thank you man, you saved my day!!! Insomnia should fix this issue, just after login to my account, I lost everything created locally, it is a very strange and enoying experience

micoraweb commented 2 months ago

Today I lost all of the requests that I was so meticulously saving for the last year. I'm a developer and I had a ton of important API requests stored for various applications, services, etc. All gone. Insomnia.. the name totally makes sense ;)

sideeffffect commented 1 month ago

It's happened again. For the second time already. All my library has disappeared. Again. I'm moving to a different app https://alternativeto.net/software/insomnia-rest-client/?license=opensource
