I had an email exchange with the project owner on the first of October last year, and he commented:

"At this moment, Kooboo is under very heavy development and big improvement, changes are not directly in Github for now since we are re-thinking a lot of things."

Given that there is a "vNext" branch, I think it is fair to assume that they are re-writing their code base so that the next version (v5.0?) will make full use of the next version of .Net and all the enhancements it will offer. However that new version of .net is still in beta I believe, so that kind of delays Kooboo to some degree too.

All this speculation aside though it would be nice if someone from the official team could comment!

Hi, project is not dead. The team is busy working on the "vNext" version. It will be a big release with a bunch of great new ideas. :)

@kooboo-mouhong are you planning to use Roslyn in new version? In current version we need pre-compile plugins and upload them. Ability to write plugins in site admin panel (like we write views) will be great feature!

Yes removing precompilation of plugins would be huge. I don't use plugins currently since i have 50 websites on one kooboo instance uploading a dll would drop all webesites from memory and reload them again and rebuilds the scripts and css for all of them that takes minutes.

While I understand that you have provided an update, and some screenshots... I feel that the frequency of communication has been severely lacking, both relative to the historical frequency of communication (via forums and other), and to the general expectation of open source projects / communities.

Looking at CodePlex, the last update was from Feb 2014, which is about 16 months old (only mentioned since it's the de facto download link for the current release)... GitHub shows a CODE update 7 months ago, and a README update 4 months ago, and issues/discussions are effectively ignored.,, in the Forums, the last comment by jifeng (since that's the only user i know to be on the kooboo team) is from 7 months ago.

I have been using Kooboo (happily) for several years now, and I look forward to vNext.

But as an open source project, I tend to expect more communication, to provide assurances that the project has not been abandoned.

Personally, I would strongly encourage that the vNext code be made available. I am aware that this is a touchy subject, since the code is likely to change (significantly, and in ways that are not backwards compatible) before its eventual release, and yet people (especially on GH) tend to like to just download the latest (not necessarily stable) code... but visibility into the progress of code at least provides such reassurances that the project is still alive. And if the problem of doing so is in fact the platform, and peoples' tendency to download premature code, perhaps a different platform would be better suited (such as CP, which gives users "recommended downloads" in addition to the source code).

Finally, I'd like to hope that the current release of Kooboo will not be completely ignored, if a bug/feature can be addressed for both codebases.

Orchard seems to be about the closest, though still a bit off, and far more annoying from the perspective of system admin, development, and content management.

Dev-wise, EpiServer seems OK, but it's definitively more of a dev platform, than a CMS platform.

Personally, I'm only looking at alternatives using .Net for a variety of reasons... so I can't speak to other options.

This project is quite stable now, i think we should continue to contribute it, don't need to wait vNext version.

Any news on vNext - I read in the readme.md that it would be released in "early 2015". It's not necessarily urgent but I think it would be good to give us end users some more information on the progress even if it's not done. Maybe you could even setup a Gitter / Slack account to provide those updates like many other OSS tools.

@dstream I agree that it is a very stable codebase, and that the project is worth continuing, regardless of the founders... assuming the license supports it, perhaps forking is the right answer.

That said, while I may feel quite comfortable with the admin and content development areas, I personally have absolutely 0 knowledge of the internal codebase. So I would probably not be a good candidate for continuing its development. But feel free to ask me about documentation or other support aspects :)

Kooboo team have provided an update, and some screenshots of new versions year earlier .... I think may be the project is dead & seems like team are busy with their clients or other projects.... *So dont wait anything else from them

@regisperrin Kooboo don't have any concurrency in C# world. You can't find anything similar for free in .net unfortunely. Kooboo with Sql Server is not a CMS but a platform for development. I use it for create enterprise software like CRM or custom web software. I created my own extensions libraries and all my development is based on Modules, in join with embedded membership, custom content types and site API make a great platform. Most similar platform for me is Django from python.

Well, I've been looking for a replacement to mojoPortal since Joe quit working on it. I was hopeful that Kooboo would be it but since it's been so long since word of vNext I've given up on Kooboo. In the meantime development has resumed mojoPortal so I'm good, I guess....
