Game crashes after intro FMV with HD mod #156

Hi there! In your releases page you mention that the Fully Possessed mod is compatible with the HD mod. Part of the instructions says to delete the "generated" folder from the mod, as it has corrupt data and can be regenerated anyways.

However from some of our testing, it seems that BFG-VR crashes right away after the intro video when "generated" folder is deleted. If the folder is left intact, then the game seems to work (although have not progressed through the whole game yet to see if there are other bugs).

Is the "Texture/Ultimate HD pack compiled by WildSide_VR" referenced in the releases page supported? Are there steps or workarounds required that developers know about? Should the "generated" folder be left alone, to prevent the crashing?

Thank you

Which hd mod did you install?

If the game crashes back to the menu, scroll up ( mousewheel or cursor up) until you see an entry in the console with 'error' in it, and post a screenshot or post the error message.

There are two folders named 'generated', one in the Fully Possessed directory, and one in the 'base' directory. You want to delete the one in the 'Base' directory.

There is also a path character limit than can cause this issue - this is fixed in the upcoming 0.22 release.

Hi @KozGit , thanks a lot for your reply!

Here's what I did:

1) Install Doom 3 BFG 2) Install Doom 3 BFG VR: Fully Possessed V0.021-Alpha 3) Download WildSide_VR's "Texture/Ultimate HD pack" from https://mega.nz/#!68BUCDZS!PVv4gQSrrP0i6U0Huetqfn-WBXZvpMkDKB81F7_9b7o 4) From the texture pack, delete the "generated" folder inside the "base" dir 5) From the texture pack, delete the "german.lang" file inside the "base/strings" dir 6) Copy Texture pack "base" folder into the Doom 3 BFG root folder, and overwrite whatever it asks

Step #4 causes the game to crash after the Intro FMV. If I skip Step #4, then it appears to work fine. In other words, not deleting the "generated" folder allows the game to work. Note that I am only at the beginning of the game, but I plan to do a full playthrough.

Other people see the same thing and have kept the "generated" folder to make it work.

The game does a full crash to desktop (windows looking for solution crap), not just to main menu. I never touched anything in the "Fully Possessed" folder, so it's probably not the path char limit issue.

Is there anything I can try to help?

Is there a very specific set of mods/hdpacks/whatever that you would recommend the community stick to?

Thanks!

@KozGit , would you recommend staying away from HD mods for now?

Try installing the texture packs first and the mod last, and be sure to let the mod overwrite anything. It works for me

rgilbert3 commented 7 years ago

@petes117 , Actually I think that's wrong.. the VR mod installer can remove files it thinks are "old files", but actually belong to the Texture pack. Additionally, the VR mod sits in its own folder now.

I'm not a huge fan of the HD pack that changes the gameplay along with the textures. It seems to cause a lot of issues, especially with savegames between versions. I really want to put together a texture/sound only pack to avoid some of these problems. I do recommend that everyone make sure the game is working before installing a texture pack, just to help narrow down issues.
