I took a look at the log, unfortunately it wasn't much help. It appears this is the same issue other a few other people have had where it crashes on startup. I can't reproduce it locally, and haven't been able to identify the issue yet, and probably won't until a volunteer lets me use their machine for some remote debugging.
By any chance did you try the test release?

Just tried it but no luck still.
A wild guess is that it could be conflicting with the current version of SteamVR.
Are you using the beta branch of steamvr? If so, would it be possible to try non beta? My steamvr is fully up to date and I can't reproduce the issue locally.
Figured it out.
It was to do with the Nvidia Control Panel since I have a Nvidia card. In the Manage 3D Settings tab, the global settings had custom values instead of default settings.
Reset to default and it now works perfectly.
Edit: not sure which particular feature in the global settings was responsible for this problem, but hopefully this can help some people.
I think I have this same, or a related issue. It was working ok last week, but as of Friday night, it would launch (thru the Oculus home launcher, and directly), but then once it got past the splash screen to the main menu, I couldn't press any buttons to get into the D3 menu, or switch to D1 or D2. I reinstalled Doom 3 BFG VR, to no avail. the desktop D3:BFG launches normally.
Win 10 Home HP Envy i7 @3.6GHz 4 core 16 Gig ram NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070
One further thing to note: I WAS able to navigate the menu system with the mouse (while seeing it in VR) and successfully load a saved game. It brought me into the save spot in VR (with the flashlight on and the gun equipped) that I was able to move in vr, but again none of the buttons were active, including the lefthand flat "hamburger" menu button. The right hand oculus menu button did work. I also could walk around in roomspace, but the stick locomotion was not working.
I'm wondering if Oculus released some sort of controller driver update that broke something?
Have played this a few months back without errors. Now though I try to launch it, but it quits a few seconds after the window with the grey screen appears on the desktop. Tried reinstalling both Doom3: BFG Edition and Doom 3 BFG VR (tried both .exe and .zip file installation) and reinstalling SteamVR, but no luck there.
Here is a log file for any helpful information.
