I have an idea: It would be great to create objects in an own overlay, which can be saved as separate file and not in the OpenStreetMap database. You could save this objects as KML-File and load it later as overlay again.

For 0.18, I will code GDAL exports, which will allow you to export in basically whatever format you like.For now, you can export whatever data you have in OSM xml format and reload it later.

I'm not sure what you mean by "overlay", though...
