Your combat rating, e.g. Elite, doesn't tell us how it was earned, by honest self-defence or by targeting innocents. Your legal rating isn't also the whole picture, as this can change over time, and bad deeds may go unnoticed in lawless systems (#37). Thus, we need a "reputation" rating that describes how honest and reliable you are.

Completing missions will earn you a reputation as a reliable person, even if these may be saintly acts of aid missions (#40), or dirty bar-room score-settling kill contracts (#39). Failing or abandoning missions will mark you as unreliable and change the nature of jobs proffered. A lone-wolf character who only looks after themselves will be offered the most dangerous (and profitable) jobs doing other people's dirty work for them.
