No idea how you could allow both without some kind of user toggle?

+1 for this, it would be perfectly fine as a flag in the settings. This tiny thing is keeping the plugin from being useful to me, as the repo I'm working on uses the AARRGGBB format.

Maybe a mask that can be set by file type for full customization %R%G%B%A
