someone explain to me why this is a good use of resources when there are already 3rd party extensions that perform this function very well?
Because all other extension implement their own settings and standards. You cannot use the Kunena bbcode in them, you have a completely different interface and because most full forum packages simply come with PMs in addition to the forums. Its the only way to integrate easy in search, or in My Messages.
Sorry, I REALLY don't see it that way. Kunena is not a full forum package, it's a Joomla extension. If it was a full forum package, it wouldn't need Joomla at all. Most 3rd party PM extensions have their own search plugin for Joomla, so the search argument is moot. I can see your point about user interface, though. Sure would be nice if the Kunena editor was usable by other extensions. Most of them support different editors like JCE, Rockpad, etc. I'd be all for turning the Kunena editor into its own plugin, but that's a whole different thread.
Different thought: a PM add-on for Kunena (sellable for profit). Isn't that what Matias was leaning towards? Offering new features as paid add-ons rather than including them in Kunena core? Make it usable by other components (like CB), and it becomes an attractive alternative to other 3rd party PM extensions.
I think it might be a good idea, and I agree with Franks idea of maybe making it an addon that is paid for (like $15 or something like that).Certainly I would pay for it.
It could pick up its styling from kunena so it matches the website, have a pop-up alert maybe, and have the layout more like individual e-mails than the walls of text PMs can turn into with UddeIM and JomSocial.
I agree that Kunena needs a PM solution. While Kunena is "just" a Joomla extension, the consistency of experience across the different parts of the same site are key to that website's experience being a good one. PMs are as much a part of the social aspect of a website community as public forums are, and consistency across them improves both. (This is not to say that they are needed for EVERY site, but when they are, they are best if consistent.)
I'd be OK if it was a for-profit add on, I would gladly pay for it. The only free alternative on Joomla 2.5 at the moment is UddeIM, which is a very different (and sub-par) UI and experience compared to Kunena.

Time to add the front- and backend for the Private Messages feature.
