this is a real hot mess. i did some cleaning, but i'm not going to try to figure this out. otherwise, i'm going to run this through the archiving pipeline and call it a day

and of course somebody uses parathenses in the path name. for the release folder. will have to figure this out and clean again...

whenever i rerun this, skip the first part of summarizing the before step since that has already been generated.
