Summary

Writing a rough syllabus for the instrumentation course. This will be a mandatory course of LA-CoNGA. It should start/contain:

For more details, refer to https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/11KFkmNFBxjI7o4CHy8nCp6AH4mHWT05ZFNRNcngE6x4/edit#slide=id.g64d6fd754d_1_0

List of changes proposed in this PR (pull-request)

The initial team working on this first draft is compose by @camachoreina , @ocariz, @nunezluis and @DennisCazar ... We might need to ask help to colleagues from NPAC

For reference, here is the syllabus of the NPAC "Detectors" course. Plan_Detecteurs.pdf

A quick but important comment raised today: our course should include a piece on introduction to basics electronics.

nunezluis commented 5 years ago

Dennis will prepare a draft of the syllabus for the next meeting (24th 13:30UTC). I have suggested two modules (16h), one for basic electronics/generic instrumentation and other focussed on detectors (also 16h) inspired in the NPAC model.

Invited Dennis to join the git organization. He has not accepted the invitation yet. Next meeting tomorrow, Thursday October 24, at 13h00 (GMT).

Some starting discussion points:

Content of particle detectors course at NPAC:

Here a list of cool projects done at the NPAC master, with the corresponding main equipments/material needed:

  1. Neutron-Gamma discrimination

    • 252Cf source
    • Scintillating detectors (BaF2, NaI(Tl), NE213, liquid scintillator)
    • standard NIM electronics
    • DAQ system… They used a high frequency sampling card called MATAC
  2. Muon lifetime measurement

    • Water tank or/and solid scintillators
    • PMTs
    • standard NIM electronics
    • DAQ system… They used a high frequency sampling card called MATAC
  3. Muon tomography using micromegas detectors

    • Micromegas… José proposed in the past to ask CEA-Saclay for a donation ;) ?
    • Radioactive source for detector characterization
    • DAQ system
  4. Gamma spectroscopy

    • semi-conductor High-Purity Ge detector
    • standard radioactive sources: 22Na, 137Cs, 207Bi et 60Co
    • NaI(Tl) scintillators
    • NIM electronics
    • DAQ system with a 4-channel acquisition card (ISIPEAK used here)
  5. Compton interaction:

    • NaI(Tl) scintilators
    • NIM electronics
    • ISIPEAK/FASTER acquisition card

I have created the file and the structure for the three courses we discussed last week: https://github.com/LA-CoNGA/WP1-Preparation/tree/instrumentation/syllabus/OurSyllabus

In particular the syllabus for the particle detectors course was updated. Julien Bolmont (teacher at NPAC of this course) will have some time next week to discuss (I told him José and I will look for him on Friday). Also, I will see Laurent Serin at the Journées Upgrade ATLAS IN2P3 next week so I will try to get his feedback too.

A very preliminar darft of the experiments we can perform witht the equipment is ready LaCONGAExperiments.pdf

Thanks @DennisCazar. Could you please also add for each proposed activity the exact list of equipment needed (as detailed as possible)? I suggest that we (@camachoreina, @ocariz, @nunezluis, @DennisCazar ) meet this Thursday at the usual time (14h30 CEST, 13h30 GMT). Could you please all confirm? In order to make this discussion useful we will need an updated version of this document by Tuesday at the latest.

Thanks and have a nice weekend, Reina

LaCONGAExperiments-2.pdf

We need to upload this document to the brach "Instrumentation", and inside the syllabus directory. The file "HandsOnInstrumentationProjects.md" is available for this.

Budget up tio date according to experiments LaCONGA_Lab_Equipment.xlsx

Hi @DennisCazar, can you please present on our Thursday meeting this cost sheet and compare the cost for each lab (mentioned to which university it will be assigned) with the costs in the original project? We need this information to make sure we are within the budget.

You can find the original project budget here: https://indico.in2p3.fr/event/19677/

Thanks!
