Here's a fun one: instead of using the Waveshare laser detector/transmitter module, make our own! It might be easier to characterize the timing required for switching and on-off transmission of the laser module if it's custom designed.

The laser module uses this Receiver for Laser Diode, with the data sheet attached.

You could use any 750nm laser module to get the best possible response from that detector module: https://www.rpmclasers.com/product/ldx-xxxx-750/
