2 months ago Unfortunately, the build instructions in the README file are probably out-of-date (and should therefore be removed/updated; thanks for bringing that to our attention). A more up-to-date description of the build process is being maintained more routinely at https://github.com/LLNL/COGENT/wiki/(3)-Building-COGENT. Please start by taking a look at that page and comparing it to the build procedure you have been attempting.
We have never experienced the issue you reported with respect to /tmp. Because this hasn't been a problem before, I don't really know what the /tmp space requirement actually is, and I'm not sure how to find out. I tried doing a build and looking in /tmp afterwards but found nothing. But of course, it's just for temporary files so...
In addition to hypre (which it sounds like you were able to build successfully), the COGENT build depends upon the Chombo library, which it checks for automatically. Chombo is a large library, which will occupy around 2Gbytes when built (depending on several options related to dimensionality, optimized/debug, etc.). If there are space issues, this seems like a logical candidate, although again, we have never experienced such. A good divide-and-conquer approach would be to see if you can build Chombo independently of COGENT, hypre, etc. The Chombo directory contains a README file with build instructions and other info. There are example problems that can be run (the MultiDimPhase problem is closest to the kind of problems COGENT solves), but if you are just able to build the library successfully, that would seem to indicate that the COGENT build problem is elsewhere.
