Temperature input file example for powder DED #5

Dear all,

I hope you are doing well, sorry to bother you. Is there any chance you have an example of a temperature input file for powder DED or WAAM, or a significantly bigger melt pool? I apologize, I know this is not the right place to ask.

Best regards, Rasoul

This is a perfectly reasonable place to ask.

I'm not sure whether thermal data for much larger melt pools is reasonable to store here - more context would be helpful. @MattRolchigo any ideas?

Thank you very much for the help and the great code,

I am looking into modelling a thin wall of powder DED. It contains one laser track per layer. The melt pool width is 1.5 mm and the melt pool height is 0.45mm. I would need something similar to Line.txt but with a melt pool of this size. What is the framework you used to generate these temperature files?

Understanding texture is important for us because it affects the magnetic properties and we are looking into this.

I have no problem adding a larger example file to this repository, but we don't have any temperature data for melt pools of this size. One thing you could consider is running an analytical heat transport model such as the Goldak model where you can specify melt pool width and depth - the melt pool would be an ellipsoid, which is reasonable for a DED melt pool, though it wouldn't contain the bead geometry. I did see a paper recently that did add an approximation of a bead to their analytical heat transport model calculation, that may be of interest for you - "Three-dimensional modeling of solidification grains structures generated by laser powder bed fusion" by Camus et al, Materialia Vol 30, 2023
