New sentence: Language inappropriate for 13-17 #1

Open anthonyronda opened 3 years ago

anthonyronda commented 3 years ago

A community member has suggested an additional bullet point under "be careful in the words you choose"

The new sentence would ask not to use language inappropriate for minors 13+

eclarke12 commented 3 years ago

Should it say minors <13? Otherwise what does 13+ include? 13-17? 13-40? 😂

To my knowledge every platform we use, GitHub, Discord, and Trello has a 13+ age restriction. I don't have any interest in taking it in a paternal/protective direction, "don't use curse words because teenagers might hear them."

That said I believe there's merit to the suggestion if it's taken to mean "be mindful that community members very well might have their activity monitored, and their participation may be (unfairly) limited for otherwise acceptable use of language."

It's probably supplementary to everything else, but a lot of the existing examples are specific and supplementary

All the "13+ age restriction" is derived from COPPA (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Children%27s_Online_Privacy_Protection_Act) which basically says "you cannot store personally identifiable information on children under the age of 13"... so < 13 years old can't create a github/discord/trello/etc.. account because that would imply they have to give their email address (personal information) or even their name 😱 That's generally why all these communities/sites are 13+ and why you can assume that there are no users under 13 (it would be against the terms of service for them to have a github/discord account).

With that FYI out of the way. I 👍 the idea of adding something along the lines of "please use language that would be appropriate in presence of children" or something like that.
