Brainstorm and outline of how the art design will go. There will be a protagonist, helpers and enemies attacking. Any genre/style.

Loving the rapid prototyping, keep em' coming!

Playing off your posts, we think we combined the ideas into something that is also distinct from our inspirations, all the while allowing us to be creative with the art design!

Title: PathLight

-An infinite vertical scroller in which the character must match his color to the field before the scrolling screen forces a misstep. Character Color matches Field Color = safe Character steps on neutral Field Color = safe Character Color doesn't match Field Color = lose -Color changes with pickups. Pickups are in primary red/blue/yellow colors (intuitive), fields that aren't neutral are the secondary colors orange/green/purple. -Character's latest two pickups decide his color. red+yellow=orange yellow+blue=green blue+red=purple. Picking up a color change item bumps off the oldest pickup, being only able to have two at a time. -All the while, the character being a hitbox with a limited radius of visibility akin to a torch, the floor (and its field colors) only visible in the light. Pickups are visible in the darkness regardless. -Character can move in all directions but is bound by the screen's scroll.

The character is a druid bunny holding a torch, the pickups being colored sticks of wood (red blue and yellow). Burning the wood casts a light of its color, a combination of colored woods result in hybrid colored flames. The flame's color must match the field's color for it to be passable by the character. A mismatch = lose, with the flame being burnt/blown out (and something gets you?) and game over.

-Hybrid Aspects: hybrid mechanic = color combinations hybrid genre = color matching infinite scroller. with extra elaboration/time, it might come off as a survival (horror) as well, achieved through aesthetic and gameplay that creates a sense of stress. hybrid aesthetic = creepy mood over cute designs = sympathy for character in spooky situation hybrid character design = jackalope lol

The base game is avoiding stepping on the wrong fields with limited visibility. If time permits, we may add extra elements to make the base game more challenging/elaborate while keeping in and enhancing the spooky theme.

Just to make sure I understand correctly: Character has three color slots, first, second and merged. At beginning of game both all are empty. Neutral field (map) and primary color fields are safe now. Character moves to blue field, first is blue, second empty. Neutral field (map) and primary color fields are safe now. Character moves to red field, blue moves to second, red is now first, merged is purple. Neutral field (map), primary color fields and purple fields are safe now. Character moves to yellow field, blue is gone, red moves to secondary, yellow is first, merged is orange. Neutral field (map), primary color fields and orange fields are safe now.

We made a couple gifs to help illustrate how the game looks and plays. I hope it answers any questions or clears up any confusion :)

This is a short animatic of how the game would play. You collect primary colored sticks to create complimentary fire colors to allow you to pass though the areas safely.

This gif is just to help show how the color combos work and that the newest stick you pick up knocks off the oldest stick color to create the new flame. game_concept_fire_changes_2

I need to eliminate some grey area so we can hone in on our goal.

All we need is an Art Direction and Title, not a Game Design. This pitch is all gravy in regards to the ends in which it fulfills those tasks, but some of these proposed mechanics (which aren't bad by any means) are out of bounds.

we combined the ideas into something

There was a miscommunication somewhere so lets clarify where we are in terms of game mechanics and game designs.

THIS (Snakes vs Colors OR Color Defense) is the idea that won the vote. This means no extra mechanics and we want to make our proof of concept 1st before anything else. The premise of our entire of workflow is recreating this engine on the programming side. On the art side we want an art direction that's in the context of a Snakes vs Colors game engine. In essence, we basically need an art swap and UI that's consistent with the chosen theme. So if the "snake" in the context of our game is a bunny whose magical aura changes hue based off of the different colors it touches then that's all gravy (as an example). All aesthetic concepts should at this point in time should be a parallel to what we know about the Snakes vs Colors game. Once we build the engine then comes the point where we can make it our own.

@keibiidraws, @hectora23, @barcley your responsibilities are Art Direction, Story (as it applies to aesthetics), and visual effects. These are not the same as Game Design, we're past that point and essentially no one holds that role. @michaelraeford and Jayden will be building a Game Design Document (and thus updating the wiki) for everyone to reference. Myself or Michelle will make a ticket with more details about this. We know the theme is hybrid and coercing this game into a hybrid theme via pure aesthetics (like some ideas in an achievable task.

The gifs look great by the way!

Here is what I'm thinking the game will look like keeping it similar to SnakeVColor

What do you think @barcley ?

Also I was wondering what you thought of the character @barcley He is a Jackalope jack

barcley commented 5 years ago

I like the character, you all did a good job with the design!
