I heard about this initiative via arabidopsis folks (TAIR) who as I understand it have hitched their cart to it when it comes to gene families:

looks like according to the official release was fairly recent (early April) and that a number of the features they have "In the pipeline" are similar to things of interest to us.
I'd say that we should have a look and see what differentiates our plan of attack from what they have done. I suspect that there is a differentiation, but it would be nice to be able to clearly articulate it...
