Possible Minetest Game license violation #10

Closed Kimapr closed 4 years ago

Kimapr commented 4 years ago

Hello. By releasing this under restrictive license you are probably violating Minetest Game's license (LGPL). LGPL requires derivatives to be released under same license terms.

Kimapr commented 4 years ago

Don't expect any contributions (unless paid) if you aren't releasing it under a free license

The default_game mods are, right! But I wrote "(except for the Mods ...)" that this is different for my mods

This PR were more a repository for my management (when I created it private domains weren't free). I don't expect anything.

Regardless of whatever or not this was meant to be a private repository it still violates the license conditions of minetest_game

Where? I copied the license of the minetest_game and changed nothing of it. I only created some more mods with a different license, they theoreticly have nothing to do with this and also could be in seperate direcories

Kimapr commented 4 years ago

Minetest Game is tightly enough integrated that it may be qualified as a derived work. Also, as you wrote in README.md:

Derived from minetest_game

Even if you don't violate Minetest Game's license, you still violate licenses of skinsdb (GPL), unifieddyes (GPL), xdecor (GPL) and possibly worldedit (AGPL). GPL requires any work that uses GPL-licensed work to also be GPL-licensed

Lejo1 commented 4 years ago

You would be happy if I put minetest_game and the added mods in a separate directory?

And what’s the different, nothing.

I didn’t changed any license, I only added a different to my mods which is my right.

Kimapr commented 4 years ago

No. That wouldn't change anything. The mods are still used in game, so they are used and for that GPL requires licensing the whole work GPL so you can't use these mods with proprietary ones.

Lejo1 commented 4 years ago

I just put different mods in one folder, they have different Licenses which is also Ok. This „game“ doesn’t has ONE License it’s just a Collection like a normal mods folder.

One folder different mods not more or less

Lejo1 commented 4 years ago

So you mean you can’t create a server with proprietary and GPL mods?

Kimapr commented 4 years ago

LGPL is less strict but GPL still requires you to release this under GPL. So either make this GPL, delete repo or remove all GPL mods.

Lejo1 commented 4 years ago

This is not ONE thing this is a folder with different mods with different licenses. Will change this in README to make that clear EDIT: changed README

Kimapr commented 4 years ago

So you mean you can’t create a server with proprietary and GPL mods?

You can, but you can't distribute it

Lejo1 commented 4 years ago

Of course you can distribute this! It's not what you call derivative code(it were called wrong in Readme so I changed it) Minetest_game and my mods are just in one folder! These two things aren't ONE!

Just two things in one directory. Slowly this is getting boring...

Lejo1 commented 4 years ago

Will change the license anyway soon. So closing here, see my https://github.com/Lejo1/subgames/tree/subgames_resort_reapi branch for future changes
