Gradients with deeper feel could look better #1

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. See the gradients of the panel background and Metacity of Shiki-Dust and
compare it with the ones in Shiki-Colors
2. Make gradients in Shiki-Colors feel as deep

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
A look and feel that is feels more sophisticated because of deeper gradients.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Shiki-Dust 0.2 and Shiki-Colors 2.1 on Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex

See attached screenshots for reference

You are referring to the panel gradients, correct?
With the current GNOME implementation, gradient backgrounds can only be applied
as a
pixmap (disabled by default in Shiki-Colors/Dust).

Try enabling one of the included gradient panels:
1. Go to Shiki-*/gtk-2.0/ and edit the panel.rc file.
2. Uncomment the "# bg_pixmap[NORMAL]" line.

See if the current implementation of gradient panels works for you.. if not,
I'll try
making a new pixmap in inkscape with deeper gradients.

I don't enable the gradient panels by default because more often than not,
users will
want to use custom panel backgrounds or apply panel transparencies and my
forcing of
a panel background hinders this.

My mistake, it seems you already enabled the gradient panels (guess I need to
get
some more coffee).

I'll try to come up with a different gradient for the next release.

Yep. The gradients in Shiki-Dust are deeper and shinier. It looks better
specially
for the panel backgrounds. I guess, it's better to head to that direction in
the next
releases of Shiki-Colors. Thanks.

Already created new gradient backgrounds. They're not quite as deep as
Shiki-Dust's
because I wanted the window list to blend in a bit better, but it should be
noticeable.

I'll upload a new version sometime in the weekend.

Thank you very much :) How about the metacity themes? Maybe, making them deeper
would
improve the look too. I'm not sure, though.

If the metacity gradients were any deeper the contrast between the two colors
would
actually make it look weird. The current gradient was the best I could make it.

The version with updated gradients should now be in gnome-look.org.
I'm too lazy to update the package here right now, I will do so later.

Is it just me or is it really not there yet?

If I make the optional gradients any deeper, they won't blend in well with the
window
list.
